RFID Hardware & Tags

The selection of RFID readers and RFID tags to be used for a particular RFID tracking application is based on a large range of criteria, including environment, product or item characteristics, read rates, distance, tag population etc. There is a large range of tags and RFID readers available and the selection of the correct tag and reader for a particular application is critical to the success of an RFID Implementation.  For example a rigid tag that uses UHF RFID and is available in EPC Global Class 1, Generation 2 (Gen 2) and ISO 18000-6B protocols, combines an impressive range with a rugged yet compact design suitable for harsh industrial applications.

Additionally, the Small Rigid Tags have a wide band antenna design, which allows for a single tag to be used virtually anywhere in the world and on a variety of surfaces, including metal, plastic and wood.

The Small Rigid Tags are ideal for industrial applications where ruggedness, chemical resistance or higher temperature ratings are required and where tag size is an important consideration.

Typical applications include:

  • Reusable plastic containers (RPC)
  • Metal cages
  • Pallets
  • Unit Loading Devices (ULD)
  • Gas cylinders
  • Beer kegs and other commercial beverage containers
  • Hazmat containers
  • Chemical containers

The RFID reader to be used is application dependent. In order for RFID readers to do more than simply read and act as a data conduit, they need processing speed and ample memory. When the host system or electrical power fails, the RFID reader must have ample storage resources, and have “store and forward” capabilities to ensure that data won’t be lost, even in the highest tag volume environments.

Applications can also monitor external sensors and controlling audible and visual indicators. For example, an application could store a day’s worth of shipping manifests, compare the pallet tags it reads against the manifests in its memory, and drive a peripheral device to issue a visual or audible signal of a correctly or incorrectly loaded pallet.
